Combining skillsets is extremely powerful.
If you are a Product Manager who understands well Marketing & Sales - you'll be so much better at:
โ
Designing your product's business model
โ
Launching your products
โ
Helping market the value they bring to your customers
โ
Collaborating and building trust with Mkt and Sales teams
If you're a business-minded designer, you're more likely to design great businesses.
Rather than just beautifully-designed user experiences, without a profitable business model to sustain them.
As Steve Johnson, Netflix's VP of Design puts it:
๐กโDesign without business is just decoration.โ
If you're a Tech leader who understands Product, that will be reflected in how you organize your teams and the culture your engineers will have...
... either "locked in a cage" - as David Pereira wrote to me a while back - or playing an active part in a cross-functional team interacting with customers.
And so on.
David Epstein puts it nicely, in his book Range:
โIn a wicked world, relying upon experience from a single domain is not only limiting, it can be disastrous.โ
Whatโs your combo?
